Dr. Vitale guides the Group's research direction and is an active participant in both retrospective and prospective studies. The Chest Wall and Spine Deformity Study Group recently released their 2010 Annual Report, which highlights their accomplishments during the past year. A major focus of the Study Group was to improve the ability for online collaboration. As a result, resources were dedicated to improve the usability of the online registry www.chestandspine.org. The improved registry now allows for easier collaboration among multiple institutions thus increasing the power of research projects. Additional highlights include advancements in education. The Study Group hosted a course for surgeons on the challenges and advanced surgical techniques associated with rib distraction, and worked with parents to identify opportunities for increased family and patient education. A request for research proposals garnered very positive results. Multiple proposals were received and reviewed, and four proposals were selected to be funded over the next two years. Additionally, the Study Group’s academic productivity included both clinical and basic research, resulting in more than 35 articles, presentations and reports in 2010.
