MRI Analysis of Kyphosis

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of MRI in measuring the range of kyphosis in children. The measurement of kyphosis in children with spine deformity is an important factor affecting the approach and extent of surgery. However, limitations in radiographic technique and penetrance, and measurement of angles in traditional X-rays, make measurement and quantitation of kyphosis difficult. Therefore it is important to identify whether MRI is reliable in measuring kyphosis.

Who are Eligible?

All children and adolescents (ages 5-18 years) with a diagnosis of kyphoscoliosis, and children with brain tumor who don’t have spinal deformity and have spinal MRI and radiographic studies.

Study Procedures/Recruitment:

Eligible patients and their caregivers will be asked if they are willing to participate in this study. After obtaining informed consent, they will be enrolled into the study at the point of contact by the consulting pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and/or a study coordinator. Once informed consent has been obtained at this visit, the patients’ radiographic and MR imaging studies will be analysed in order to obtain the data required for our study.

Enrolled Participants

We calculate we will need 33 patients in each branch of the study.
