Jian Sun, MD, president of the Nanchang Hospital in China presents a gift of thanks to Bernadette O'Brien, RN, Vice President, Operations, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian, for hosting a three-week Visiting Fellowship program.

July, 2009 - Four hospital leaders from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University in China completed a three-week Visiting Fellowship program at NYP and the Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. Sponsored by the non-profit organization Children of China Pediatrics Foundation (CCPF), the fellowship program provides an opportunity to observe US surgeons in the operating room, outpatient clinics, Grand Rounds and to meet with hospital leaders. “Education is an important part of the CCPF annual mission to China, described David P. Roye, Jr., MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery and the Medical Director of CCPF. “During each visit, our team of volunteer physicians and nurses provide seminars and teach side-by-side with our host surgeons in their operating rooms. The Visiting Fellowship program extends that education and I am proud to show them our hospital and share our knowledge.”

Included in this group was the president of the hospital, chief of the orthopaedic department and chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to clinical observations offered by Dr. Louis Bigliani and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Dr. Sidney Eisig, Director, Division of Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the physicians were provided facility tours and meetings with hospital administrators and leaders, thanks to the help of Pat Molholt, PhD, Executive Director, Global Health Care Learning.

“Our visitors were well received throughout the institution,” said Dr. Roye. “Witnessing the teamwork at each level was one of the observations they were most impressed with.” In addition, one of the surgeons remarked that he was able to observe surgical techniques he had only seen in textbooks.

CCPF’s mission is to provide direct medical care to disabled children living in China’s orphanages. The all-volunteer team of physicians, nurses and operating room technicians is comprised primarily by members of the Children’s Hospital and New York Presbyterian. The team is scheduled to return to China in October.
